With the film premiere in Korea and Australia complete and things moving forward towards the UK and the United States, apparently the set visit reports, which were previously embargoed, have been green-lit and are ready for launch! We have a bunch of various websites reporting on these visits and writing up different articles in regards to G.I. Joe: Retaliation. Let’s go through them:
Screen Rant made their set visit before the film’s delay, now quite a while ago, and do a great job breaking down the visit and summarizing various interviews with cast and crew. They visited Fort Pike, the NASA facility in New Orleans and write up a fantastic run down of various things we can expect based on their experiences.
Wow, the folks at Latino Review go all out for this set visit. There’s a full blown video blog with El Mayimbe, Frosty (from Collider), and George from Arcade Sushi, and they break down the visit as well. The links you see above are various different things that Latino Review brings to their site with the set visit, including tons of cast interviews, the video blog itself, and a whole lot more. I think they really nailed this one.
Collider also posted the video blog recap that Latino-Review mentioned above, but dove into their set visit report, too, breaking down 25 (yes TWENTY-FIVE) things to know about the upcoming G.I. Joe: Retaliation film. Now, granted, they didn’t go as crazy as Twitziller with his 40 reasons to catch G.I. Joe: Retaliation, but 25 ain’t no slouch. It’s a great article that you should definitely check out. Also, as you can see above, they have posted a plethora of actor interviews straight from the set of the film.
You know what I love about these set visits? Everyone is really doing something different. Latino Review loads up on the interviews and does a video blog… Collider runs with 25 things to know, and ComingSoon.net goes old school with some great G.I. Joe themed filecards, which each link to a different interview, up to eight in total. A very unique way to present that. I dig it.
IGN also made a visit, and does a terrific set visit report, too. Rather than posting separate interviews with each cast member, they take some interview highlights and weave them into the content of the story itself, which is an effective tact, to be sure. It’s very thorough and well presented.
As you all can see there are a ton of details here, a ton of links, and a veritable avalanche of G.I. Joe: Retaliation content. Let it envelop you! Two weeks to go!

Apparently with the official reveal today of the four minutes of footage set to air before Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, the lid has been popped on G.I. Joe: Retaliation, and stories are starting to emerge. First thing I noticed was an interview with Collider where Jon Chu talks about the delay of the film, the rumors about Channing Tatum and more.
The Collider interview can be found right here, but I’d like to touch on some things. Also, if you remember, Jon Chu’s first public comments about the film delay were made right here on GeneralsJoes and seem to echo much of what he says to Collider.
One of the cooler aspects of this article involves the fact that apparently at least one of the sequences in the film itself is a 10 minute “Silent Interlude” homage, which is pretty cool. The specific comments regarding the silent sequence can be seen below:
“JON M. CHU: That was definitely an inspiration. That’s where it all started. Obviously, ninjas are a big part of the movie, and we thought it would make it really unique from other franchises to have both the military and the ninja side. So, we wanted to make sure that we did something really different with ninjas that we’d never seen before. And because they have masks on and they don’t talk anyway, it was just a perfect place. We could tell story with their fighting. When you see the whole sequence together, it’s really fun. In fact, the fight between Storm Shadow (Byung-hun Lee) and Snake Eyes (Ray Park) has no music. We had score, a long time ago, and then we just played it once, when I was with the sound effects guys, without the music just to hear the effects, and it was so awesome. We were like, “We need to have their whole fight without music.” So, we brought it in and tried it, and knew people would freak out a little bit, but it’s so awesome that you can’t deny that it’s fun to watch them do their thing.”
Pretty neat. I think the fact that there is a sequence even without music is a really great touch. Most folks reading GeneralsJoes understand my stance on the whole “Channing Tatum” reshoot angle, too, and it seems like that was mostly confirmed by Chu as well:
“CHU: Yeah, that was a crazy time! I didn’t want to answer any of the crazy rumors that were happening, at that time, but the reality was the 3D. We were told they wanted it turned into 3D, and luckily we had the time to do that. It just so happens that the March date was a date that they could do it in, and that gave us enough time to focus on it. We didn’t reshoot anything. We didn’t go in and [add] Channing. I’m not going to say what happens to Channing in the movie. You have to watch the movie. But, there wasn’t any of all that crazy stuff, so we just ignored it. It’s funny, when the new trailer came out, everyone was like, “Oh, Channing is in it way more!” I just didn’t want to say anything, but it was very interesting. There were rumors that we shot more things, but we literally didn’t shoot anything. We had done some reshoots a couple days before all that, in January, that were just some pick-up things, but that’s pretty much it.”
But Chu doesn’t just talk about the delay, he brings up many other thoughts, too, speaking about how it felt to bring the HISS Tank to the screen, and many other very cool details. Check out the full interview on Collider.com. News is heating up!

I know the rumors were flying after the delay of G.I. Joe: Retaliation that seemed to focus on star Channing Tatum. Without a doubt the focal point of G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, Tatum’s popularity has exploded in the years since then, and with rumors circulating around his demise in the sequel film, many inside sources claimed to have knowledge that this delay would also include significantly more Tatum.
I never bought it.
Considering the star actor’s shooting schedule and the requirements it would take to bring actors and crew in to shoot significantly more footage of him, I just couldn’t see how they would manage to do all of that, all while converting the film to 3D over a period of 9 months. It has always been my suspicion that the sequel might feature different footage of Tatum, but would not necessarily feature more. I’ve always said I thought they might recut the film or tweak it, or perhaps add just a short bit of new footage perhaps to show that Tatum was not killed, but it was pretty unrealistic to assume they would squeeze in a lot more footage among the rest of the story.
According to producer Lorenzo Di Bonaventura this assumption is right on target. He spoke with Crave Online, and mentioned that while there was a little bit of new shooting involved with the new cut of G.I. Joe: Retaliation, Tatum will not appear in the film much more than he originally did. His exact quote was:
“It’s not much different,” Di Bonaventura says. “Literally, we shot for three extra days. We just added sort of explanation in what we did afterwards.”
Which does make sense. You can’t just bring in a single actor and shoot new scenes to broaden his scope in the film. It would involve the whole cast and crew and significantly more time and resources. The producer also said (speaking about whether the delay was to add more Channing Tatum to the film):
“No, it’s not,” Di Bonaventura says. “That is a complete rumor. I don’t know where that started. Literally, Channing shot for – if I have it wrong, I’m off by an hour – four hours, five hours? So it wasn’t really about that at all.”
I won’t argue that they likely reconfigured the film a bit to make it look as if Duke did not get killed as they originally planned…but as Di Bonaventura says, I believe the final film we see in March is not going to be vastly different from the one we would have seen in June…aside from the 3D.

At least according to the Twitter account UK Film Premieres, which seems to be legitimate from what I can tell. According to this Tweet, the G.I. Joe: Retaliation UK film premier will hit in February, 2013 and will have Bruce Willis, Channing Tatum, and Adrianne Palicki in attendance.
Obviously this hasn’t been officially announced by Paramount yet, but some quick research of past Tweets from this account seem to indicate a level of legitimacy, so we’ll go with it for now.
And with a sudden jolt, you realize just how close we are to the release of the film. Under 90 days until it hits American theaters. Holy wow!

We’ve seen this poster before…well kind of, anyway. It was originally revealed as a Brazilian movie poster last year, but has been updated for domestic release, with the addition of the “3D” designation, and the addition of a little Tatum mushed between Snake Eyes and Joe Colton on the top row.
This would certainly lend some credibility to the idea that the film will put a bit more attention on Duke, and likely will not kill him as was initially rumored. Check out both the original and the new poster below. Thanks to Entertainment News International for the heads up.
