G.I. Joe Collectors Club Figure Subscription Service has the Scoop!

After the bru-ha-ha from yesterday’s Salvo reveal, the G.I. Joe Collectors Club comes back strong today with the reveal of their excellent rendition of Scoop from the fifth Figure Subscription Service.

The figure looks excellent, re-using Airborne’s helmeted head and coming with some great 25th Anniversary accessories.  The addition of the submachine gun is a great touch as well.  I’ve never been particularly attached to Scoop, but his representation in the DiC mini-series Operation: Dragonfire has put him at the top of many fans’ character lists.

Scoop looks really awesome and is a great way to end the week.  Check out the reveal at GIJoeClub.com or the image mirrored below.

Underneath Scoop I’ve posted images of all the reveals to date as well.  Nine figures shown so far!

Figure Subscription Service 5 Salvo reveal quickly leaves collectors scratching their heads

Ever since his name was first uttered at JoeCon 2016 as being a part of FSS 5, Salvo was a figure I was greatly looking forward to.  Not just because he was one of my favorite 1990 characters, but because I could immediately picture some pretty straight forward builds that would represent the character perfectly in the modern format.

Today, I quickly got a flurry of messages from several friends when the reveal went live, and when I heard it was Salvo, I was excited…  his look original look was remarkably plain, but equally distinctive.  Bald head, muscular build in a t-shirt, he was a front line missile launching bad ass that didn’t need any sissy armor, and was happy to tell his enemies that the might was indeed right.

As I eagerly navigated to GIJoeClub.com my excitement quickly turned to disappointment.

I try to temper my opinions based on early Photoshop mock ups, because they are just digital images and not always true to the finished product, but when it comes to the FSS Salvo… there’s quite simply nothing right about this figure.

Well, maybe I’m being overly harsh.  The helmet isn’t bad.

I can’t comment about the head, because you can’t see it underneath the helmet, but if it’s Serpentor’s head, then there’s no redeeming that either.

What kills me is that the perfect recipe for an updated Salvo is RIGHT THERE.  All they really needed to do was slap some better paint over the Retaliation Roadblock figure they’ve used countless times, but instead they’re using the Law torso and arms, which are great body parts, but are not nearly beefy or muscular enough for Salvo.  As if trying to accommodate that, they give the figure the large-thighed Resolute legs, but all that does is accentuate the scrawny torso and arms.  Layered on top of this is the strangely colored legs which are monochromatic green and an attempt to mimic the color of the machine gun belts with odd gold straps.

Simply put, this figure is a mess.  As I said, I hesitate to make snap judgments on most of these reveals, because I understand they are digital mock ups, but in Salvo’s case there isn’t a single thing I can find to explain away here.  Perhaps there’s something about the tooling library we don’t know…there would almost have to be, because I can’t think of a logical reason why the figure build would be done this way rather than several other ways.  Even the font on the shirt is off.

I don’t think anyone would claim that Salvo is a critical element to any G.I. Joe roster, after all, this is the first version of the figure we’ve seen since the Direct to Consumer line eight years ago.  But one would think, at the premium price that the FSS garners, we should be getting premium effort, and I’m sorry, but Salvo doesn’t meet those expectations.

Go check out the reveal at GIJoeClub.com and make sure you log into their forums and make your voice heard if you like it (or don’t).  It may be too late to change anything at this point, but if we’re getting two more years of exclusive product, make sure as the consumer, we speak intelligently and respectfully.

Salvo was destined to be one of the highlights of FSS 5, and sadly, this figure doesn’t pass muster, especially not for a figure with an MSRP of over $30.  I’ve been buying product from the Club for nearly 20 years, I know they can do better.  They should do better.

Figure Subscription Service 5.0 Gaucho Revealed

By far my favorite Action Force subteam is Z-Force, so I’m loving the fact that the G.I. Joe Collectors Club has been focusing on that particular branch to bring us characters that were once European exclusives.

The latest member of that team comes to us in the form of Gaucho!  Originally released with the Action Force Headquarters, Gaucho was a Gung Ho repaint back in the day, so it makes sense for him to be a Gung Ho repaint now as well, using the incredible 50th Anniversary Gung Ho as a base.

This figure looks like a great version of the Z-Force mechanic, and I’m excited to see how he looks with the other Z-Force operatives the Club has released previously.  Check out the preview on GIJoeClub.com or the image mirrored below.

My only question at this point… what tattoo is he going to have?

EDIT – Looks like the emblem from the Mexican flag is what’s likely on his chest:

G.I. Joe Collectors Club reveals FSS 5 Raptor!

The roster for 1987 Joes and COBRAs is quickly getting filled and today we get our first look at the latest member of that esteemed line up… Raptor!

As I just posted this morning, Raptor does use some Pursuit of COBRA Zartan parts and Resolute Pilot Destro legs (which makes some sense with the pseudo bird-claw feet).

The use of a removable retro falcon cowl is interesting, and while I would have preferred a completely newly tooled head and/or cowl, this may be functional enough.  Unfortunately the Photoshop work doesn’t do the look and fit any favors.  I like the Jungle Viper wings.  All in all, the build is good.  He’ll fit right in with Battle Armor COBRA Commander, Big Boa and Croc Master.

Now where’s my Crystal Ball dammit?

G.I. Joe Collectors Club Figure Subscription Service 5.0 Orders are open!

They started the reveals last week and now FSS 5 is up for pre-order!  Along with the pre-order they have posted descriptions of the majority of the figures as well (with the exception of Xamot, who supposedly has some tooling questions).

I love seeing these descriptions and trying to get an idea of how each figure is going to be handled based on them.  For example, check out Raptor:

(Based on the classic 1987 action figure!)
Includes: removable falcon headpiece, harness, whistle, winged backpack, revolver pistol, bird staff, falcon with removable hood, and figure stand

My guess based on this?  I think the removable falcon headpiece will be new tooling, but I also think we’ll be seeing some Pursuit of COBRA Zartan elements, too.  The bird staff and falcon with removable hood are from that particular figure.  I love how they’re including Sgt. Slaughter’s whistle, too.  My guess for the winged backpack is the Pursuit of COBRA Skydive (which Black Vulture and Flying Scorpion came from) because that somewhat approximates the look of wings.  If they want to match the cloth of the original wings, though, it’ll probably be the “flying squirrel” backpack from Resolute Snake Eyes and a the Convention Air Commandos from this year.

Then there’s Salvo:

(Based on the classic 1990 action figure!)
Includes: removable helmet, rocket launcher with projectile, weapons case, pistol, and figure stand.

I love the removable helmet from the 1990 version, but one would think that helmet’s tooling is probably lost.  However, the 2006 Direct to Consumer Salvo did come with a similar helmet, and I wouldn’t be surprised if that one is still around.

The guessing game is fun, but I suspect shortly we’ll see everything we want to see, and the FSS order period is open until September 2nd!  Don’t lose your chance to be a part of one of the G.I. Joe Collectors’ Club’s most exciting line ups to date.

G.I. Joe Collectors Club 5.0 Battle Corps Cobra Viper revealed

To close off your work week, the G.I. Joe Collectors Club reveals the FSS 5.0 version of their Battle Corps COBRA Viper!  Interestingly, the Club didn’t go for a straight redeco of their Iron Anvil Convention Figure, but instead leveraged a chunk of the Jungle Viper.  Honestly, I think I prefer the Iron Anvil build, but as a 90s lover, I’ll certainly take this, too!

Check it out at GIJoeClub.com and the mirrored image below.
