It seems ridiculous to even assume that a sequel to G.I. Joe: The Rise of COBRA is already in the planning stages before the first film has even hit the street…yet, there are articles across the ‘net (on IGN, Cinemaspy, or even the Brisbane Times for example) that seem to indicate a sequel is almost a done deal. Normally this kind of talk makes me roll my eyes at least a bit.
However, this time around, the talk is coming from the production staff. In fact, Stephen Sommers himself said in Australia that they were beginning production of a sequel, and from what I’m hearing, San Diego ComicCon is abuzz with rumors that production might even already be under way.
Ultimately, this could be a big to do about nothing, but in the world of Hollywood, one can never tell…I think all we can do is sit back and hope the dollars start flying on August 7th so the franchise can continue to expand, and we can get a bigger focus on COBRA like we all want. I know there are aspects of this origin story that have a lot of folks scratching their heads, but I really think given some more material to work with, we can get a really interesting new universe crafted.
And if nothing else, every couple of years we get a whole buttload of new toys out of it. Win-win.
Friend of GeneralsJoes, Jeff has passed along information from the latest issue of Previews, and there is a lot of Joe intel in there. Take the dates with a big grain of salt, they’re likely just place holders, but click the “Read the Rest of the Story” link below to check out what’s listed.
So my current “most wanted” figure is the COBRA Elite-Viper. He’s one of the few Wave 3 figures that I don’t yet have, and every picture I see makes me want him more. He seems to strike the right balance between movie aesthetic and somewhat more traditional troopers. No out of whack armor on the forearms, some nice pads and more standard military gear. I really dig him.
Over at JoeCustoms.com, chrysophylax has posted some great images of this impressive looking figure. The thread is here, and the images are posted below.
tkprime has posted a great new video up on his Facebook page featuring a short promotional piece for G.I. Joe: The Rise of COBRA. There’s no real footage to get excited about, but a neat sequence with some stunts and such on the water. Just a little something to whet the appetite as August seems further and further away…
Braxthunder over on HissTank.com reports that he found a G.I. Joe: The Rise of COBRA Mission Dossier paperback book at his local Barnes & Nobel and talks a bit about what’s inside. sn8ke3y3s also chimed in with some very cool images of the book cover and a few inside pages.
I have been in full on “Rise of COBRA” mode over the past few weeks, and this looks like just what the doctor ordered! Lots of pictures, lots of details, and 144 pages of Rise of COBRA goodness. Gotta get to my local Borders and snag it quick…hopefully it’ll hold me over until August 7th!
